What is Crib 5?

What is CRIB 5 / Ignition Source 5?

The term CRIB 5 or otherwise know as Ignition Source 5, relates to furniture or furnishings, including beds and mattresses which have been tested to pass UK Fire Regulations 1988. The tests carried out do not make an item entirely fireproof, but dramatically reduces the risk of ignition which could potentially save lives.

Who does it affect?

All of the following hospitality businesses are recognised as requiring Crib 5 / Ignition Source 5 treated products and therefore must use ‘contract’ mattresses and beds:

  • Hotels
  • Guest Houses
  • Bed and Breakfasts
  • Holiday Parks
  • Holiday Lettings
  • Youth Hostels
  • Universities
  • Health Care Sector

What makes a product legally compliant?

In order to buy a mattress or bed for commercial use, the product must comply to specific UK Fire Regulations comprising of the following tests:

  • BS EN597-1 (Cigarette)
  • BS EN597-2 (Match)
  • CRIB 5 - BS7177

Why must your business follow UK fire regulations?

Government legislation dictates that it is an offence to use contract mattresses and contract beds that have not met BS7177 standards for commercial use. Failure to use a product that does not meet the minimum requirements could lead to prosecution in the event of a fire and invalidate your insurance.
